I visited the Chathams recently, and this is what I saw. Sorry to strike a negative note at Christmas. Next post will be more cheerful - promise!
Rekohu
This is a place of silences. A big
green island, a vast lagoon, fields lying
under water, some small enclosures of
karaka where they hid from the intruders.
In the museum, their clever wash-through
fishing canoes, woven like coracles
from small branches.
Waves roll in to smash on
the white beach. The clouds are filled with pearly
light. There will be rain again. Framed against
the sky, twisted trees are tortured by the wind.
